Dr Whalen is a board certified dermatologist who has been in practice since the early 90s. She attended Stanford University where she received a degree in Human Biology. She later proceeded to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine for her degree in Medicine. She had her residency in dermatology at the University Hospital of Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio.

She was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Department of Dermatology, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine for several years. She is the recipient of several awards including the Alpha Omega Alpha award and has participated in various community service projects as skin cancer lecturer for church and senior citizen groups.
